wake up to the desert.

A Swiss-tent camp on the edge of the Thar, where camel trails, jeep tracks and firelit evenings take the place of a street address.

Our story

Rumi's began the way most good desert camps do — with a family who already knew every ridge of the Sam dunes long before a single tent went up. For years they led camel trains out for other people's camps; eventually they built one of their own, close enough to the dunes that the safari starts at the tent flap.

What hasn't changed since is who's running it. The same guides who take you out at sunrise are the ones playing music by the fire that night, which is why the evenings here feel more like being hosted than being programmed.

Today Rumi's is a small, family-run camp rather than a resort chain outpost — two tent categories, one kitchen, and a stretch of dune that's ours to share with you.

The living fort at the centre of the city, followed by the carved sandstone havelis just below its walls.

A quiet rainwater tank ringed by small shrines — a good early-morning or golden-hour stop.

Open Thar scrubland further out, worth the drive for guests hoping to spot the great Indian bustard or chinkara.

Sam Sunset Point
05

Sam Sunset Point

1 hour

Ten minutes from camp — the busiest dune in the area at golden hour, and worth it anyway.

Patwon ki Haveli
06

Patwon Ki Haveli

1–2 hours

A cluster of five ornate merchant havelis, the finest carved stonework in the city.

Evenings, done properly

The part of the day the camp is really built around.

Once the jeeps come back off the dunes, the camp turns toward the fire. Rajasthani folk musicians play through dinner, a fire show usually follows, and the crowd around the bonfire tends to stay long after the plates are cleared.

Food runs multi-cuisine — Indian, Chinese and a few international staples — served buffet-style so second helpings are easy.

A few reviews from recent stays — swipe through with the arrows.

★★★★★

The camel ride out, the meal by the fire, the sky after — it felt like the trip's real centrepiece, not a side activity.

Our host walked us through the whole evening himself. Nothing felt rehearsed for tourists.

★★★★☆

Went in expecting a tent for the night and came away with the best evening of the whole Rajasthan trip.

Guest, travelled from Mumbai
★★★★★

Smooth pickup from the city, comfortable tent, and a jeep safari that didn't feel rushed. Would book again.

Guest, travelled from Bengaluru
★★★★★

The stars alone were worth the trip out here. Bring a jacket — the desert gets properly cold after dark.
